National trademark

Term Main definition
National trademark

Trademarks can enjoy protection as a national trademark in a country, e.g., a German trademark in Germany.

National trademarks grant protection in the respective country, i.e., a German trademark in Germany. In contrast to the national trademark, the protection for different countries for the European Union Trade Mark and the International Trademark is bundled. The European Union Trade Mark grants protection in the Member States of the EU, an International Trademark in those countries that were claimed in the application or in a subsequent extension of protection.
